Dune 45 Dune 45 is named for its proximity to Sesrium Gate. It is situated 45km from the gate, along a paved road and is easily reached using a 2×4 vehicle. Its fascinating shape and accessibility makes it the most photographed dune in the world. The dunes of the Namib Desert were created by sand carried by the wind from the coast of Namibia.

The wind has picked up, just as I begin to climb Dune 45, here at Sossusvlei. The uphill hike was already going to be relatively tough but this is making it even harder. It's all this damn sand! Each step you make up a sand dune has its own small struggle, as your foot sinks down into the sand and you have to pull it back out to tread forward.

The Sossusvlei (vlei=pan) is a salt-clay pan surrounded by dunes. In the Nama language Sossus means something like "blind river" and refers to the Tsauchab River, which when in flood seeps away in the desert without reaching the only 50 km far Atlantic above ground. 60,000 years ago the Tsauchab River presumably did flow into the Atlantic Ocean.
